Our Impact

Solgaard is independently and through partnerships working to reduce plastic waste on our planet. For every product sold, we clean up 6 lbs of ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities.

Our products are made with ocean-bound plastic.

Materials

We are intentional when designing and manufacturing our products. We're working towards efficiency and circularity. As much of our material as possible is made from ocean bound plastic or biodegradeables. We're not perfect yet - but we're on a journey to do as much good as possible.

Our portfolio of sustainable materials includes:

Shore-Tex®

Our proprietary fabric made from ocean-bound plastic.

Shore-Tex®

In 2017, we began working to build a supply chain for commercial scale plastic collection from beaches and riverways, using that to make fabric.

Solgaard unveiled its award-winning proprietary fabric made from ocean- bound plastic, Shore-Tex® in 2019. Acknowledged by Fast Company as a ‘World Changing Ideas’ 2020 Award Finalist, Shore-Tex® is now used in all Solgaard bags and suitcases, including the Carry-On Closet, named ‘Best Inventions’ Award Winner by TIME Magazine.

Shore-Plast™

Durably made from ocean-bound plastic.

Shore-Plast™

In 2019 we started researching ways to replace ABS plastic in our electronics with ocean-bound plastic collected from beaches and riverways.

In 2020 we released the HomeBase, Solar Boombox, and Solar Juicepack all made with Shore-Plast as the primary material. In 2021, we launched the Shoreline watch, also made with Shore-Plast™

Recycled Polycarbonate

Strength without compromising the durability of our suitcase shells.

Recycled Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a ridiculously strong material. We use up to 60% recycled polycarbonate - the maximum we're able to without compromising the strength and durability of our suitcase shells.
CURRENTLY
100%
of our products feature sustainable materials.

Supply Chain

Our supply chain is paramount at Solgaard. We ensure that our factory and supply chain partners pass the highest standard of audits. As we grow we maintain close attention to the experience of every person who contributes to our success.

CURRENTLY
100%
of our travel gear factories have been audited within the last year.
CURRENTLY
85%
of our partners use reputable third party audits like ICAS and/or WRAP. We're working towards 100%.
AS OF 2021
100%
of our our freight shipments have had their carbon offset achieving neutrality.

Recycling and Repurposing

The circularity and durability of our luggage is of the highest concern to our team. In addition to preventing plastic from entering the ocean, our intention is to begin robust carbon capturing initiatives.

Impact and Progression

Projects & Partnerships

One of the most exciting parts of Solgaard is the impact we’re able to have while working with our network of impact partners. Through collaboration we’re able to have a greater impact.

Impact Partnerships & Projects

Sungai Watch

As part of our flagship impact partnership with Sungai Watch, we’ve funded a new plastic waste collection and sorting facility in the mangroves of Denpasar, Bali, and installed a series of river waste collection barriers across Indonesia.

Sungai Watch

As part of our multi-year plastic collection and mangrove health restoration partnership with Sungai Watch, we’ve hired a team of locals to install and operate a series of river barriers collecting over 1,000 kgs of plastic daily from Indonesia’s most polluted rivers and mangroves. In addition to purchasing equipment to wash and shred the plastic waste collected, we funded the construction and operation of the Sungai Watch x Solgaard Mangrove Facility, a new collection and sorting facility in the mangroves of Denpasar, Bali, open for public visitation as of 2023. These efforts not only intercept ocean-bound plastic before it pollutes the ocean, but also revitalizes the mangrove ecosystems and restores their natural ability to capture carbon.

Eco-Brick Project

In partnership with Greeneration in Indonesia, we support the infrastructure build out of an eco-brick facility.

Eco-Brick Project

Solgaard provided the funding for the infrastructure and equipment necessary to make eco bricks made from ocean plastic in Banuwangi, Indonesia.

This project is managed by Greeneration and was done in partnership with Coralive and Eco-Ranger ID.

NextWave Plastics

We are a proud member of the NextWave Plastics consortium of companies.

NextWave Plastics

The NextWave Plastics is an open-source initiative convened by Lonely Whale, connecting and uniting traditionally competing multinational companies to develop the first global network of ocean-bound plastics supply chains. Our fellow NextWave Plastics member companies include; Bureo Inc, CPI Card Group, Dell Technologies, Herman Miller, Humanscale, HP, IKEA, Interface, and more.

Join the movement, Make an impact.

To put it plain and simply:

Materials in product

We use recycled, ocean-bound PET to make as much of our products as possible. The fabric made from ocean-bound plastic is called Shore-Tex®. The Durable Plastic is called Shore-Plast®.

Materials in product

We see using recycled and recyclable materials as a bare minimum step that we should all do.

Collections

Additionally to the material that goes into our products, we prevent plastic from entering the ocean via beach, mangrove, and riverway ocean-bound plastic waste collections. This collection is done via our network of third party global collection partners. In total, we ensure that 6lbs of plastic is prevented from the ocean for each item sold.

Collections

This is how we get to plastic negative-by going above and beyond.

Why the additional collection matters

The additional collected amount is rarely PET, it’s more often low value plastics which are harmful to the environment and not picked by collectors due to their low value. Our goal is to collect all plastic as quickly as possible from the date of sale. Our mandate is that we complete the funding for this collection within a maximum of 12 months from the date of sale.

Why the additional collection matters

Typically, Waste collectors are only paid for the high value PET material. By us going above and beyond with this model, we're able to stop way more waste from the environment.
